Replacing the Heating Element of a Joven Water Heater to resolve the heater not producing hot water and power tripping problem.
Before: Joven JH25
Date Of Replacement: 14 Apr 2025
Project Location: Casa Sarina

Before Replacement:

The Joven water heater was not producing hot water due to a tripped circuit. Inspection revealed a leaking heating element and the use of undersized 1.5mm wires with unsafe connectors. The installation did not comply with SS 638:2018 standards, posing safety risks.
After Replacement:

The faulty heating element was replaced, a proper junction box was installed, and the wiring was upgraded to 2.5mm² to comply with SS 638:2018. The heater was tested and confirmed functional, with work supervised by licensed professionals to ensure full compliance and safety.
Inspection Findings
The technician found the heater had tripped, and there was no hot water. After removing the cover, it was discovered that the heating element was leaking internally. The tank body was intact with no visible leakage. Unsafe 1.5mm wires and non-compliant connectors were used.
⚠️ Non-Compliances:
- Did not comply with SS 638:2018 standards.
- Unsafe cable size: 1.5mm² instead of the required 2.5mm².
- Use of non-compliant wire connectors.

Compliance Notes
Faulty Heating Element:
The water heater’s heating element was leaking internally, leading to system tripping and loss of hot water. Such faults can cause electrical shorts or even fires if water contacts live components. Prompt replacement is essential to restore functionality and ensure safety.
Undersized 1.5mm² Wiring:
Using 1.5mm² cables for high-load appliances like water heaters is inadequate and non-compliant with Singapore Standard SS 638:2018. Undersized wiring can overheat, increasing fire risks. Upgrading to 2.5mm² cables ensures the system can handle the electrical load safely.
Non-Compliant Junction Box:
The existing junction box lacked proper enclosures, leaving connections exposed. This poses risks of electrical shocks and short circuits. Installing a compliant junction box protects connections from environmental factors and aligns with safety standards, enhancing overall system reliability.
